When Vegas Attacks!!!
About Me
- Danny Boy
- Born in Venice Beach California, Danny O'Donnell was exposed to the "oddities" of society from a very early age. After coming to Sin City when i was 14 only to have affirmed the things i had learned walking the Venice boardwalk. I have traveled through many different scenes. Punk, Greaser, Metal head, Goth, Raver, & Indie. I can assign all of those to me and yet none at all. I find myself a wanderer between the tribes. Always looking and taking the little bits I see to make an over all me. All of this combined with being raised by my single Irish Catholic mother has created a unique individual, or so I've been told. I have deep rooted passions in theatre, live music, and film. Anything that has to do with people expressing their creative souls to the world. Contact me via email at whenvegasattacks@gmail.com

Repeats
So I'm completely willing to admit that I'm a huge geek when it comes to video games & sci-fi/fantasy stuff. I felt like I wasn't standing up to my geek standards when I didn't see Tron in theaters. So I rented it this past weekend and gave it a watch. Now don't get me wrong, it was a very entertaining movie while I was watching it. But the more and more I actually think about the movie the more I feel that it was an unnecessary waste of time. They really didn't make any drastic changes from the original movie. I mean I know its a follow up to the original by following flynn's son. But look at the formula of the first story: Man gets sucked into computer world, man has to fight his way out with the aid of a program. And for the second story: man gets sucked into computer world trying to find his dad, man has to fight his way out with the aid of a program. Its the SAME story!!! Now your following the kid as he does exactly what the father did in the first movie! That smells desperately close to a remake to me.
Now I'm not against remakes. If you think you can redo a story and give it a twist, make it more appealing to a different audience then be my guest. But when you make a carbon copy of something and just upgrade the graphics/effects I feel like its a major waste of time and money for someone who has seen the original. Sure targeting it at the younger demographics that haven't seen it before will get them interested in the story. But why not just re-release the original? I mean are we going to remake star wars episode 4 in 10 years with a whole new cast and better graphics? NO! Because the story would be exactly the same and theres nothing wrong with not having your movie being 90% CGI. A perfect example of a good remake is Battle Star Galactica. The original show only existed for 1 season and had gained a huge fan base. In 2004 someone decided that they wanted to remake the series. They changed some major story arcs, changed sex of characters to give interactions a different feel. It pays homage to the original but yet is its own entity. I wish more producer/directors would do this when they decide to remake something.
Anyways back to Tron, I had a friend tell me that it's just a giant Daft Punk music video. I don't entirely agree to that. Yes a majority, if not all of the music is done by daft punk. Which I'm surprised to say i liked. I'm not known for being a Daft Punk supporter. I think its a good movie in its own right. Great story, awesome effects, a fun watch. But they could have done so much more with it. Dive more into the world of the grid, its such a vast and interesting world they created yet you barely get to see any of it. So for anyone who has seen the original theres really no point in watching it. For those who haven't seen the original, give either a watch. Seeing one over the other really wont effect the story at all. Your Humble Host, signing off.

Amazing Evening
I walk through the hotel towards the show room, the normal hotel staff staring at me like i've lost my mind. Reaching the ticket booth for the night i see a jack in the box and a toy soldier standing next to the table. After getting my wrist band i begin to walk up the hallway towards the doors when i see something out of the corner of my eye. Turning i see a very large man in a very tiny room through a glass wall. He was a grin on his face and a look of insanity in his eyes. Rocking back and forth he is petting what looks to be a stuffed rabbit and talking to....something? He's the only one in the room yet looks to be in a heated debate. After standing there for a few minutes i finally pull myself away from it and continue towards the door. I'm stopped right next to the entrance where another box has two female figures in it. One looks to be a type of pregnant cat lady and the other is a marionette. I was about to say to myself, "Nice props." when the marionette woman starts to move and twitch, looking up at me with blank eyes. Taken aback i hurried into the theatre.
As always Slave of the Muse stands up to their name with a magnificent evening. Many ball goers surrounded me as i made my way through the dark red theater. You can tell Slave Of The Muse members apart from the rest of the crew by their stark color contrasts. While most patrons wore dark, lavish colors. SOTM all wore muted tones of white, silver, and grey. This was spoken about by the ring leader of the event "The Hawker", what I took from his eloquent speech was that we the patrons bring the color, the life, that spark to this little pocket realm we stepped into. I loved looking around the ball and amidst the sea of crimson's and black were these small blips of alabaster, silver, and grays. Characters as wild as a moving jack in the box, a ballerina, to a rather large....man?...woman? called the baroness. A toy soldier, a doll, a jester, and a man in a full face mask with hair resembling hell-raiser stomping around. With special guests Soriah the Tibetan Throat Singer and a acrobatic Silk performer Faegann, there was plenty to feasts the eyes and ears apon.
The clarion show room is a magnificent venue, but a little off for SOTM's usual dance themed nights. The two dance floors were split on each side of the theater so you had to chose where you wanted to dance. Not that this stopped people from shaking it for most of the night. As the night raged on crew and patrons mingled and relaxed more and more with the every increasing lubricant of drinks and the freedom of being someone else for the night. I felt myself desperately under dressed for this event next to all the wonderful costumes, even though i had spent a fair amount of time on my mask and outfit. As the night wound down i began to hear whispers of a Masque Demortus II event coming in october. A night of celebrating the dead by living while we can.
Finally with a ringing of bells the night draws to a close. All the white characters file back on stage and the curtain closes in-front of them all except for The Hawker. I'll admit i wasn't in a completely sober mind at this time so i don't recall the exact words he said, but he thanked us for coming and enjoying the pocket universe that he had found & left us with a few hints of whats to come from Slave of the Muse before stepping back behind the curtain. Looking around the theatre, the resounding emptiness left with all the white characters gone was palpable, even though the room was still full of patron's. To me this showed just how well these characters fit into this place. Its like coming home to your parents house and finding it completely empty. Everyone turned and started to say their good-byes and filed out of the theatre. Like the ending to a good book, I was sad that it had ended but felt a satisfaction in knowing this would not be the last time i'd see these characters.
For those of you that missed it. You truly missed an amazing thing that is all to rare in this world. Without a doubt Slave Of the Muse still has me as a life long fan and patron to any event they ever put on. I hope you now will take my words and come down the next time this wondrous troupe decides to put on an event. Your humble host, signing off.

A Night Of Anonymity
Coming very soon, April 1st to be exact, is going to be a night well worthy of note. Its Slave of the Muse's 3rd Anonymity Ball. http://www.slaveofthemuse.com/ I would love to be able to get to cover this event for When Vegas Attacks!!! But unfortunately is too short of notice to be able to pull off. I have been to many of these folk's events and they never fail to give a night to be remembered. This event is a masquerade ball thats going to be held at the Clarion hotel here in Las Vegas. For a very reasonable cost of 25 bucks you will be transported into another world for a night of wonder. These folks put on dance and theme nights with a heavy stage and theatrical notion. Ball goers are encouraged to craft a new personality and immerse themselve in ephemral worlds created. A brief excursion into anticipation, dance, revelry and imagination. Masks are required for the event but costumes aren't. Honestly though, who doesn't like a good costume party?
